OCR Studio Unveils Web Demo for ID Scanning Beyond Browser Limits

OCR Studio, a leader in optical character recognition solutions, has launched a Web Demo that allows everyone to try browser-based scanning of identity documents, bank cards, and barcodes directly on a mobile phone. The demo is designed to prove that advanced in-browser OCR technologies do not require cloud processing, external servers, or GPUs to stay highly accurate and reliable. OCR Studio’s solutions for secure browser-based document recognition are already used by banks, insurers, and other fintech companies worldwide.

OCR Studio’s specialists made in-browser scanning of identity documents and machine-readable objects possible with the WebAssembly technology and the proprietary ultra-lightweight neural networks. This allows the demo to operate even on low-power devices and maintain near-native speed during the recognition process in any popular browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.). Currently, the Web Demo supports ID cards, driver’s licenses, passports, and residence permits of GCC and EU countries. It also scans documents’ machine-readable zones (MRZ), QR codes, and bank cards of any format.

A key feature of the Web Demo is that recognition runs entirely on the end-user’s device – any extracted data and identity document images are not sent to clouds, external servers, or crowdsourcing platforms. OCR Studio’s solutions are based on the same principle which helps companies reduce unnecessary data exposure and the risk of a vendor-side data breach as well as enhance regulatory compliance.

“For years, the market viewed the browser as an extremely constrained environment suitable only for simplified user flows. OCR Studio is challenging that assumption. Our new Web Demo clearly shows that on-device recognition of IDs, bank cards, and machine-readable objects can run directly in the browser with unprecedented precision and without relying on external parties. Many vendors still struggle to achieve this level of performance, robustness, and user privacy even in native mobile applications – yet this is exactly what we are bringing to the web” – Konstantin Bulatov, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer of OCR Studio.

In future updates, OCR Studio plans to expand the Web Demo’s document coverage to include all MENA countries, US states, as well as countries in South America, East Asia, and Europe.
