OCR Studio Unveils AI Technology for Error-Free MRZ Scanning in Any Real-World Conditions

OCR Studio has introduced an AI technology for MRZ scanning with reliably high accuracy in user-captured ID document photos taken under any real-world conditions. The technology is optimized to run directly on users’ devices within mobile applications and browsers. The solution enables banks, fintech companies, and retailers to process passports, ID cards, visas, and other identity documents in low resolution photos captured at extreme angles or with the document tilted or rotated.

During real-world onboarding in mobile and web environments, users typically capture their documents quickly with everyday smartphones rather than carefully optimizing lighting and angle. As a result, MRZ characters may be obscured by glare, shadows, and blur, causing standard OCR systems to fail and forcing customers to retake document photos multiple times. This friction can significantly increase the share of users who abandon the KYC process before completing registration and reduce conversion rates for businesses.

The new technology reads MRZs in challenging poor-quality images with low resolution, off-angle capture, and excessive lighting, successfully extracting MRZ data on the first attempt even in extreme conditions. At the same time, it virtually eliminates false responses in difficult cases and does not require users to fit the document within an on-screen frame or hold the camera at a precise angle. This directly translates into higher automation and conversion rates, as well as lower manual review costs for businesses.

The new technology is already integrated into OCR MRZ-scan, OCR Studio’s flagship solution for machine-readable zone scanning. It performs fully offline on the user’s device, ensuring 100% data privacy and compliance with EU’s GDPR, Saudi Arabia’s PDPL, China’s PIPL, and other data protection frameworks. The system supports the current ICAO Doc 9303 MRZ standard and is adapted for the next-generation ICAO/ISO MRZ specifications. This allows seamless user experience during the transition period.
