OCR Studio Introduces Browser-Based MRZ, Barcode, and Credit Card Scanner

OCR Studio, a developer of optical character recognition systems, has adapted three of its flagship technologies – OCR MRZ-scan, OCR CODE-scan, and OCR BANK-scan – for web environments, following the earlier web adaptation of OCR ID-scan. Now, it is possible to read the machine-readable zone (MRZ) of ID documents, barcodes, and payment card numbers directly on a website without installing apps or plugins. This is crucial for banks, fintech companies, and telecom operators looking to expand product availability and improve conversion rates.

OCR system’s adjustment to web interfaces was achieved through the WebAssembly (Wasm) technology that enables direct, high-performance, and secure integration into any popular browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.). This ensures genuine device independence as the user experience remains consistent whether the client accesses the webpage on a desktop or his smartphone. Furthermore, OCR Studio’s browser-based technologies run at near-native speed even on mid-budget mobile devices due to the ultra-lightweight neural networks.

OCR MRZ-scan correctly handles not only the MRZ formats that follow the current ICAO Doc 9303 MRZ specification but also the ones that comply with the next-generation ICAO/ISO MRZ standard. Meanwhile, OCR CODE-scan is able to read 2D (QR, Aztec, DataMatrix) and 1D (Codabar, Code 39, EAN-8) barcodes from any surface and in harsh conditions. OCR BANK-scan enables instant scanning of credit and debit cards and supports various card formats of 20+ payment systems. The recognition can be performed using a mobile phone’s front or rear camera – no special equipment is required.

OCR Studio’s solutions offer seamless integration into web applications for industries requiring fast, accurate, and secure optical character recognition in browsers. All computations run entirely on the end-user’s device with no risk of image transmission to third parties – external servers, clouds, or crowdsourcing platforms.
