OCR Studio Unveils the World’s First Browser-Based Arabic ID scanner

OCR Studio, a developer of optical character recognition technologies, has announced the first-ever Arabic ID documents scanner applicable right on the web page. The actual feature was built into the company's browser-based ID scanner. For the first time, the AI-system can reliably read Arabic passports and ID cards in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and other browsers without transmission of data from the end-user's device. Arabic script is one of the hardest to recognize for a computer not merely because of its symbols and punctuation that run right-to-left. The writing is cursive, so letters change their shape based on their position in the word and are often connected making the segmentation far more complex than in Latin scripts. Some symbols in Arabic differ only by one or two dots, raising the bar for precision in character recognition.

The new ID scanning technology not only handles these difficulties while staying robust to blurs, low resolution, and poor lighting, but also can be deployed in browsers. The new capability is powered by WebAssembly (Wasm), enabling direct, high-performance, and secure integration on web pages. All calculations are made fully on-device without transmitting data to clouds or external servers. The software provides a consistent experience on desktop, tablet, and mobile phone.
