For the first time Mobile World Congress (MWC) – the world’s most influential event in the mobile and connectivity industry – was organised in the MENA region. This year it turned the Doha Exhibition & Convention Center into a meeting point for more than 250 exhibitors, including such tech giants as Microsoft, Google Cloud, and Huawei. From 25 to 26 November, experts across AI, intelligent economies, and related areas discussed Qatar’s ambition to build a digital-first, innovation-driven economy aligned with the country's National Vision 2030.
The OCR Studio team also took part in MWC Doha 2025, where we unveiled our ID recognition, browser-based ID scanning, and industrial OCR technologies at our branded stand. One of the tools we brought for visitors' live demo experience made a big splash, gathering a whole crowd of attendees. In this text, we reveal what all the hype was about.
Thanks to the ultra-lightweight network at the core of our recognition technologies, they do not require many computation resources, and thus, they can be embedded in a wide range of devices. It is not just about mid-budget desktops and tablets – our AI systems efficiently run on mobile phones, scanners, and stationary cameras. Most significantly, the computations needed for text or machine-readable content recognition are performed on-device and without data transmission to clouds, external servers, or crowdsourcing platforms.
This approach enables our OCR technologies on another type of device – AR glasses. These wearable «smart goggles» are able to inspect license plates, vehicle identification numbers (VINs), utility meters, shipping container IDs, seal numbers, and more. Border guards and seaport employees with this technology just have to look at the number – recognition results will be displayed right in the lenses. The attendees' excitement about these AR glasses is hard to express with words. During the two days of MWC Doha 2025 exhibition, we had a constant flow of visitors willing to try them on.
However, AR glasses were not the only thing attendees were curious about. At MWC Doha we showed our cutting-edge recognition systems and even let everyone test them on our synthesized document templates and a semi-truck model. Here are the most remarkable ones:
Multilingual ID scanner. This system is capable of reading ID cards, passports, driver’s licenses, and other ID documents from 250+ issuers in over 100 languages, including not only Latin-based but also Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, and more. Furthermore, the technology performs authenticity checks – one of them is data cross-validation in which visually inspected information from the document is compared to the data encoded in the MRZ and the data stored on the NFC chip. This protects companies from impersonation and a vast variety of document manipulations.
Browser-based scanning for KYC. This is one of the latest improvements to our flagship technology, OCR ID-scan. It is perfect for any KYC, digital onboarding, or age verification procedures as it runs entirely on a web page in any popular browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.) with no apps or plugins to install. The algorithm safely extracts any data from the client's ID document – full name, date of birth, region – and makes a fast registration to any platform possible. It can also conduct a selfie-to-ID-photo match, ensuring that the person is physically present and is the legitimate holder.
Industrial OCR for harsh environments. This technology was specifically designed for scanning machine-readable objects in the industrial settings. The system is robust to extreme weather conditions, poor lighting, dirt, and heavily obscured text. It is able to read shipping container IDs and license plates from any country no matter what the camera angle is. To extract the data, Industrial OCR requires just a fraction of a second. The same algorithm is used in our well-known AR glasses, which we demonstrated at our stand.
For OCR Studio, MWC Doha became the final milestone of our 2025 exhibition season, and our 2026 event calendar will start with MWC as well. Next year, it will be held from 2 to 5 March at Fira Gran Via, one of the world’s largest fair venues which is located in Barcelona. We at OCR Studio have already reserved a spot, so see you soon in Spain!
