How We Unveiled Browser-Based ID Scanning Technology: OCR Studio at Money20/20 Middle East

This year Money20/20 held its inaugural Middle East edition – the event took place at the Riyadh Exhibition and Convention Center in Malham, Saudi Arabia. The exhibition brought together more than 45 000 visitors and over 450 companies, including such fintech giants as Visa, American Express, and Amazon Payment Services. Furthermore, Money20/20 was attended by 600+ investors from 40 different countries. The main focus of expert discussion has traditionally been the future of financial services and the role of technology vendors. Money20/20 Middle East was held from 15 to 17 September 2025, giving companies three intensive days to demonstrate their new products, sign deals, and showcase their vision of the next-gen tech infrastructure.

OCR Studio’s experts also participated in Money20/20, where we launched our new product for browser-based ID scanning. The innovation debuted at our branded stand, so visitors could try it in real time with any document they wanted. In this text, we take a closer look at the technology’s capabilities and explain how we made it possible to run AI right on the web page without external servers.

Debut of the Browser-Based OCR ID-scan

Money20/20 attendees were among the first to view our recently launched technology for ID scanning right on the web page with near-native speed. The solution supports every popular browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.), which makes it device-independent – the same website can be opened on desktops, tablets, and even smartphones. With our web ID scanner, users do not have to download any programmes or buy specialised equipment, as ID scanning can be completed in a couple of seconds with the device's front or rear camera.

How Web-Based OCR Scanning Works

OCR ID-scan’s special ability to be deployed on a website was achieved by our developers through the cutting-edge WebAssembly (Wasm) technology. Moreover, ID scanning operates entirely on the end-user’s device, meaning that no data is transmitted to external servers, clouds, or crowdsourcing platforms. For this to be possible, we created our own ultra-light neural network, which is undemanding in terms of computational resources and does not require graphic processors (GPUs).

The browser-based ID scanner was designed to prevent spoofing attacks during the verification process in web environments. It supports over 100 languages, including Latin-based scripts, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, and recognizes ID cards, passports, and other ID documents from around the world. The new solution also enables secure online onboarding in the browser via selfie-to-ID-photo verification. It works by checking face liveness and comparing a live selfie with an image from an ID, confirming the presence of a live person.

Browser Verification Technology for KYC and Compliance

This web identity verification technology is relevant to various government and fintech services, telecom operators, and many other companies that work with clients’ sensitive data and conduct KYC or age verification procedures. By processing data locally, OCR Studio’s solutions adhere to strict privacy regulations such as Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), UAE Federal Level data protection laws, and other similar regulations.
