After two intense days, GITEX AI ASIA, the region’s largest technological event that took place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 9 to 10 April, has come to an end. For the OCR Studio team, the exhibition was a great opportunity to showcase a range of privacy-first solutions for KYC and payments. The technologies we demonstrated run directly on the end user’s device and are all tailored to Asian markets’ specific needs.
This, unsurprisingly, drove strong engagement from GITEX attendees – tech executives and decision-makers representing over 110 countries. Our solutions attracted particularly strong interest among visitors from Singapore, China, Japan, and India. In today’s blog post, we reveal which OCR technologies for Asia-Pacific markets sparked the most conversations at our stand.
Built for the Region’s IDs and Regulations: APAC-focused AI system
Asia-Pacific (APAC) is the world’s most populous region, home to nearly 60% of the global population (over 4.3 billion people). The customer flow from APAC countries is enormous – however, working with Asian identity documents presents non-trivial challenges. Not many identity verification vendors support the credentials most commonly used across the region in KYC and onboarding workflows. Many existing OCR systems struggle with recognition of such writing systems as logographic, alphabetic, abugida, and syllabary due to the thousands of character classes, cursive writing, and unusual letter connections that occur in some of the Asian IDs.
Another difficulty is the region’s stringent data-privacy regulatory landscape. The rules set by Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), and Indonesia’s Law No. 27 on Personal Data Protection (PDPL) make fast and convenient KYC workflows far more difficult to maintain.
This year at GITEX, our team demonstrated that both of these problems could be easily addressed even without exposing the client’s data to clouds, external servers, or crowdsourcing platforms. Our versatile APAC-focused AI system was designed specifically for businesses that work with Asian customers. The solution supports identity documents in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Urdu, and many other widely used languages across the region. At the same time, its on-premise architecture helps businesses align with regional data-privacy requirements.
The solution seamlessly integrates right into your web, mobile, or backend applications and does not require a GPU to operate – the latter amazed our visitors the most. The technology is powered by our proprietary ultra-lightweight, highly optimized neural networks that allow the system to run directly on the user’s smartphone, tablet, or laptop without even a stable internet connection.Throughout the two-day exhibition, attendees actively tested this APAC-focused system using our demo app and the recently launched browser-based Web Demo. For their convenience, we also brought various document samples that visitors could use to try the recognition – the three document samples visitors tested most often were:
Chinese passport, Japanese driver’s license, Vietnamese ID card
Such interest in these exact IDs is pretty clear. Japanese and Chinese ones use logographic writing while the Vietnamese ID features a detailed background. Even so, our OCR system instantly extracted the data with the highest accuracy.
Built for ID Fraud Detection: Three-Layer AI Toolset with Asian Documents Support
Our second headline showcase was an on-device AI toolset for advanced document forensics built around three anti-fraud layers: document manipulation detection based on the image of the ID, data cross-validation with NFC verification, and selfie-to-ID face matching. The three-layer solution supports identity documents issued in all major Asian countries.
The new technology helps businesses strengthen their KYC workflows against the rising threat of financial fraud – particularly in APAC, where fraud-related notices in Interpol’s system increased by 47% from 2024 to 2025. Together, the three layers verify data printing techniques and fonts, detect image tampering, deepfakes, and morphed IDs, perform data cross-validation by comparing information from the VIZ, MRZ, and NFC chip, as well as prevent spoofing attacks when fraudsters use stolen or fake ID photos to bypass verification.
The solution works under any capture conditions and does not require high quality scans – which made it easy to try right in our booth during the event. Moreover, the technology does not store or transmit user ID data at all. This unique feature drew a lot of attention from banks, fintech companies, and public-sector representatives.
Built for the APAC Payments Market: Bank Card and QR-Code Scanners
The rapid growth of the APAC payments market naturally increases the interest in OCR technologies that reduce friction and boost conversion rates. Our flagship solutions – OCR BANK-scan and OCR CODE-scan – were designed for exactly these purposes.
The first solution enables instant extraction of payment card numbers from a single image with 99.6%+ accuracy. It supports bank cards of any format, including those widely used across Asian markets. This allows businesses to reduce online checkout time to just seconds.
The second solution enables banks and fintech companies to add payment QR-code scanning to their mobile and web applications – integration into web applications is possible through the WebAssembly technology. The system can scan barcodes from smartphone screens, POS terminals, and billboards under any lighting conditions. This makes payments easier across diverse real-world scenarios and helps businesses create additional revenue opportunities.
